The difficult task of choosing the size of stick
Who should I listen to? My coach? Where do I buy the stick from the store?…
There is a lot of conflicting advice, various arguments and misinformation surrounding this topic. Choosing the correct length is VERY important!
It is important to have the correct size stick to perform basic and advanced skills. Length can be the deciding factor in completing a pass, making a tackle, or making a mistake.
We are going to give you some guidelines so that you yourself can make the right decision to choose the size of your stick or that of your child.
As we said before, the length of the field hockey stick can affect the game and control of the ball, as well as the ability to hit. If your stick is too long, you can inadvertently hit the ground, breaking the stick. If the stick is too short, you may be bending too much and causing serious back problems.
The sizes of the children’s sticks range from 18″ to 35″.
Size 18″ is the typical mini stick that is given to a newborn or a small child of 1 year.
From 18″ onwards, the stick must always go from the ground to the navel, so you have to measure that height well and take into account the inches they are. It seems easy but the size is often not exact. Here is a tip for all parents, it is better small than large, we refer to this with the typical phrase; a stick for when he grows up!
The stick can pass two fingers above the navel, but no more! Otherwise it hurts the child to control the stick and makes the technique with the ball difficult.
Once the child goes to adult size; size 36.5″ or 37.5″, forget the navel reference. It is usually between 10 and 12 years old depending on height.
The standard measure is 36.5″ unless the player is very tall or lazy to bend down, it seems silly, but it happens! So they prefer size 37.5″.
A 12-year-old boy using the same stick as his mother? Yes! That’s right, they are both within the standard measurement! We assume that the mother is taller, so she will simply have to bend down a little more than the son.
There is also a size 38.5″, but it is unusual to use it. There are few who ask for this size, but it must be taken into account.
When choosing the size of the stick, you have to be consistent with the size and not want a stick bigger than the one it fits! This is only going to hurt your game and you are going to carry more weight in your hand!
